Heatset Web Process

The term "heatset" is a little misleading when you're talking about the heatset printing process. Yes, there is an oven that more-or-less bakes the paper as it spins through the web press, but what is the heat really doing?

The function of the ovens on a heatset web press does not dry the ink as oil-based paints need to boil or evaporate to dry, which would be over the burning point of the paper it has been applied to and start a fire.  The ovens actually evaporate the solvents in the ink before the paper is fed into a chilling unit which sets or hardens the ink.
